Accelerated Reader Program Guide

A brief overview of our reading incentive program at Stephens Elementary

Accelerated Reader Program

Reading is critical to everything we do as active members of society. It helps us earn a living, participate in politics, care for our families, and stay healthy. Reading also fosters our personal growth. As we read, we learn from the characters’ personal experiences and insights, and are often entertained in the process.
Reading is a skill, and like every other skill, it requires practice. The more you read, the better you become at reading. Our Accelerated Reader Program is based on the fundamental principle that practice improves reading. It combines the power of technology and sound teaching strategies. It enables students to practice the strategies they are learning in class.
To help students achieve this skill, our students read books and take the AR computerized tests. The program assigns points for proficiency and monitors student achievement. With teachers and parents working together, our students can achieve maximum reading growth.
